About The Club

     The National Forensic League, now the National Speech and Debate Association, was founded in 1925 to encourage and motivate high school and university students to become proficient in the forensic arts: debate and public speaking. 
     Over 1,000,000 students in all fifty states have been in the NSADA, and currently over 91,000 students are in this prestigious honors society. Prominent NFL alumni include President Lyndon Johnson, Vice President Hubert Humphrey, media mogul Ted Turner, radio commentator Rush Limbaugh, TV personalities Oprah Winfrey and Jane Pauley, and Supreme Court Justice Stephan Breyer.

      In 1997, the ECHS NFL, now NSADA, was first formed, but it was not until Spring 2000 that six students succeeded to NSADA membership.  Year after year we grew.  The first student in Carteret County to earn the Degree of Distinction with the right to wear the ruby attained the status of Triple Ruby Degree of Special Distinction when he graduated was East Carteret’s Morehead Scholar, former President Josh Boudreau. In January 2001, East Carteret High School was ranked number one in the Tarheel Forensic League for the Greatest Strength. East Carteret went on to win this award again in December 2002, February 2003, September 2003, September 2004 and in August 2005. 
     Speech contests are held in policy debate, value debate, legislative debate, mock trials, extemporaneous speaking, original oratory, dramatic interpretation, humorous interpretation, radio announcing, duo interpretation, commentary, impromptu speaking, prose reading, poetry reading, and expository speaking.
